So what’s the difference between broadband and Ethernet based connections? In short broadband remains a contented service so sometimes offer little in way of service levels. Ethernet based solutions usually offer SLA’s with guaranteed return to work timescales.

ADSL or ADSL2+ uses copper to deliver traffic across the provider network with speeds up to 24Mbps.

Fibre broadband utilizes the newer fibre based infrastructure that has been implemented across the UK by BT and can deliver potentially faster speeds and arguably greater reliability. There are currently two variations available for fibre based broadband, FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) and FTTP (Fibre to the Premises).

FTTC

FTTC uses the existing copper infrastructure from the premises to the cabinet and then the new fibre infrastructure from the cabinet to the exchange onto the provider’s core network. FTTC can deliver speeds of up to 80Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload.

FTTP

FTTP provides speeds of up to 330Mbps and upload speeds of up to 30 Mbps by using the fibre based infrastructure from the premises through to the core network.

Leased Lines

A leased line is a dedicated 1 to 1 connection from the customer’s premises to the Ethernet core network and is a high performance, secure, connection that is permanently available with fast speeds from 2MBPS to 10Gbps.

Leased Lines are also fully managed with SLA’s and back up and are offered as a wired or wireless solution.

 

SOGEA

SoGEA stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access.

Up until now, to deliver broadband to a home or office, you needed to have a traditional phone line installed and then ADSL Broadband or Fibre Broadband provided on top of it.

BT Openreach are now delivering a single order version of Fibre Broadband and GFast Fibre Broadband that means you or the provider do not have to install a traditional copper phone line to compliment the service. SoGEA includes an underlying version of a phone line.

What Speeds Are Available With SoGEA Fibre Broadband?

The up-to speeds that are currently available are:

  • SoGEA 40mb / 10mb
  • SoGEA 55mb / 10mb
  • SoGEA 80mb / 20mb
  • SoGFast 160mb / 30mb
  • SoGFAST 330mb / 50mb

SoGEA stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access.

Until now you needed to have a traditional phone line installed to deliver broadband to a home or office, but SoGEA broadband doesn’t run over a phone line; instead, it uses the same fibre/copper network without the WLR (Wholesale Line Rental = Phone line) element.

SoGEA is offered at the same data rates as FTTC broadband. It delivers the same performance and has the same geographic availability. The only difference is the need for a phone line has been removed.

SoGEA is a dedicated line that delivers a broadband connection and includes an underlying version of a phone line. This means that customers moving to SoGEA from a phoneline-reliant broadband solution will need a voice call service that uses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) to continue to be able to make and receive phone calls.

What is SoGFast Fibre Broadband?

SoGFast Fibre Broadband is the GFast variant of SoGEA Fibre Broadband.

Is SoGEA or SoGFast Different In Performance Than FTTC & GFast?

No, you will receive exactly the same performance as you currently do. In some bases you will get a better performance since there is no call traffic that can interfere with integrity of the service.
